On the latest episode of Women In..., I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Mocktail Mo — a fierce advocate, entrepreneur, and voice for the alcohol-free community. What sets Mo apart isn’t just her creativity with mocktails or her vibrant personality. It’s her deeply personal and often misunderstood reason for going alcohol-free: she has an actual allergy to alcohol.

In a world where social drinking is often the norm, Mo’s story is both empowering and enlightening for anyone who must — or chooses to — live alcohol-free. Whether you're allergic to alcohol, curious about changing your relationship with it, or simply looking to advocate for better options in your community, this blog post is for you.

When Alcohol Isn’t an Option: Living with an Alcohol Allergy

For people like Mo, alcohol isn’t just a lifestyle choice — it’s a medical necessity to avoid it. An alcohol allergy (or intolerance) can cause a range of dangerous reactions, including skin flushing, nausea, rapid heartbeat, or even anaphylaxis. While some may roll their eyes at a “mocktail,” for Mo and others, it’s not a trend — it’s survival with style.

If you or someone you love is living with an alcohol allergy, here are a few tools and tips to help navigate this path confidently and safely:

Tips for Living Alcohol-Free with an Allergy

1. Learn to read labels like a pro.
Alcohol can sneak into unexpected products — from sauces and dressings to over-the-counter meds. Always double-check labels, and don’t be afraid to ask questions at restaurants or stores.

2. Have a go-to script for social settings.
Mo shared how helpful it is to have a few phrases ready, like:

“Thanks for the offer, but I’m allergic to alcohol. I’ll stick with something else.”
You don’t owe anyone an explanation, but being clear helps avoid pressure or confusion.

3. Build a mocktail arsenal.
Check out Mocktail Mo’s Instagram (@mocktail.mo) for recipes that don’t compromise on flavor. Stock your pantry with alcohol-free staples like zero-proof spirits, fresh herbs, fruit purées, and sparkling waters.

4. Find your people.
Whether it’s a sober-curious Facebook group, a mocktail club, or coaching communities like mine, you’re not alone. Surround yourself with others who understand and respect your choice.

How to Advocate for Alcohol-Free Options at Restaurants

One of the best parts of my conversation with Mo was hearing how she helps restaurants think beyond water and soda. If you’re tired of limited drink options when dining out, try these tips:

1. Speak up — kindly, but clearly.
Next time you’re out, ask:

“Do you have any alcohol-free cocktails or zero-proof options?”
If they don’t, suggest they explore brands like Lyre’s, Ritual, or Seedlip, which offer complex, delicious non-alcoholic spirits.

2. Ask to speak with a manager or bartender.
Chefs and mixologists often want to get creative. Sometimes they just need a nudge or know there's a demand. Mention that having inclusive drink options makes the experience better for everyone.

3. Follow up with gratitude.
If a restaurant offers a great AF drink, tag them on social media, leave a glowing review, or tell your server. Positive reinforcement encourages repeat behavior.

4. Bring the mocktail movement with you.
Share links, offer sample recipes, or even host a pop-up mocktail tasting with friends or local businesses. Your advocacy can change the industry — one menu at a time.
